The following article was published in November as background to the latest tax bills.
http://www.fosters.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20091116/GJNEWS_01/711169911/-1/ROCNEWS0105 Some lake residents send email to the Selectmen (or at least those who were Selectmen at the time). There were some interesting points raised. It would be interesting to see the opinions and others posted here.

Thanks for posting this. It is hard to imagine that just the school portion of our tax bill is a bit over $9.00. Also, when you hear the citizens in Alton complain about their entire tax bill, which is a little over $11.00 per thousand, I go a bit crazy. And the school is proposing a 6% increase over this year's operating budget. Unfortunately, New Durham doesn't have enough votes to do much about it.

Given that the Lake property owners do not use the school system and very few of the town services, the tax assessments on lake property are outrageous. In my opinion, it is taxation without representation and is true throughout the state of NH.

The town officials who sent the bill will be the same ones to complain when the old house/cottage is torn down and 11 McMansion's take it's place. |
